Frequently Asked Questions
These answers cover common questions about using Hitfactor and making decisions about a YouTube channel. For step-by-step instructions, follow the links to the relevant guide.
Publishing and video details
Section titled “Publishing and video details”Does Hitfactor upload my video directly to YouTube?
Section titled “Does Hitfactor upload my video directly to YouTube?”Yes. When you upload a finished video through Hitfactor, it is initially uploaded to YouTube as Private. In the publish checklist, you can leave it Unlisted or schedule it to publish automatically. YouTube requires scheduled videos to remain private until their scheduled publication time.
If you upload through YouTube Studio instead, use Unlisted so Hitfactor can discover and connect the video. A private Studio upload may not be discoverable by Hitfactor.
How do I edit a video’s details after it has been scheduled?
Section titled “How do I edit a video’s details after it has been scheduled?”Before the video becomes public, open the video in Hitfactor and select Edit details below its scheduled status. You can change the title, thumbnail, description, landing-page links, UTM parameters, or schedule. You can also cancel the schedule; the video will remain private and return to the editable publish checklist.
How long does it take Hitfactor to detect a newly uploaded unlisted video?
Section titled “How long does it take Hitfactor to detect a newly uploaded unlisted video?”You do not need to wait for a background sync. Open the publish checklist or select Refresh in the video picker to start a channel refresh. Hitfactor can discover public and unlisted YouTube Studio uploads, but not necessarily private Studio uploads.
What does Hitfactor use to generate video titles?
Section titled “What does Hitfactor use to generate video titles?”Title generation uses the video’s name and concept information, including its logline, problem, payoff, and summary. It can also use audience information, company facts, and previously generated titles. At least one of the logline, problem, or payoff must be filled in; adding more specific concept detail gives the generator more useful context.
Can Hitfactor handle a thumbnail that is not already in YouTube’s aspect ratio?
Section titled “Can Hitfactor handle a thumbnail that is not already in YouTube’s aspect ratio?”Yes. You can upload a JPEG or PNG up to 50 MB. Hitfactor automatically center-crops the image to YouTube’s 16:9 dimensions at 1280 x 720, then optimizes the final file to meet YouTube’s upload limit. The current upload flow does not offer manual crop positioning. See Thumbnails for the complete workflow.
Landing pages, links, and attribution
Section titled “Landing pages, links, and attribution”Can Hitfactor add tracking links to a YouTube description?
Section titled “Can Hitfactor add tracking links to a YouTube description?”Yes. After you create a landing page, you can add it to a video’s description. Hitfactor creates a short redirect link for that video, records qualified clicks, and sends the viewer to the landing page’s destination. You can add up to three distinct Hitfactor landing pages to one video. Landing pages are not added to every video automatically. See Landing Pages and Tracked Links for setup instructions.
Can the landing-page destination be different for each video?
Section titled “Can the landing-page destination be different for each video?”Yes. Choose the landing pages you want to include for each video. Because the YouTube description contains a Hitfactor redirect, changing a landing page’s destination later updates the existing redirects without replacing the short links in every YouTube description.
Changing a landing page’s name or call to action does not automatically rewrite text already published in YouTube descriptions.
Where does Hitfactor put links in the video description?
Section titled “Where does Hitfactor put links in the video description?”Landing-page links appear as movable blocks in Hitfactor’s description editor. You can drag them to place or reorder them among the description text before saving the description to YouTube.
Can I edit a Hitfactor-generated link directly in YouTube Studio?
Section titled “Can I edit a Hitfactor-generated link directly in YouTube Studio?”You can edit the YouTube description and move the link or change its surrounding call-to-action text in YouTube Studio. Preserve the Hitfactor short URL itself if you want tracking to continue. Do not reuse one video’s tracked link in another video’s description, because clicks would still be attributed to the original source video.
Does Hitfactor track clicks automatically?
Section titled “Does Hitfactor track clicks automatically?”Yes. The Hitfactor short link records the visit and attributes qualified clicks to the source video. Reporting filters known bot, scanner, and link-preview traffic, so not every automated request to the short URL appears as a click.
Does Hitfactor track conversions automatically?
Section titled “Does Hitfactor track conversions automatically?”Click tracking works through the short link. Conversion tracking requires Hitfactor conversion tracking to be configured on the destination site, such as through the Hitfactor JavaScript snippet or a supported integration. Place the conversion event at the point that represents completion, such as a thank-you page, signup confirmation, or successful booking.
Hitfactor can attribute a conversion to a qualifying tracked click from the preceding 30 days.
Will Hitfactor conversion tracking replace our existing analytics?
Section titled “Will Hitfactor conversion tracking replace our existing analytics?”No. Hitfactor’s conversion event is independent of Google Analytics, HubSpot, and other analytics systems. It gives Hitfactor its own attribution signal while your existing analytics continue to operate.
Can we keep using our existing UTM parameters?
Section titled “Can we keep using our existing UTM parameters?”Yes. Hitfactor does not require UTMs for its own attribution. Existing destination parameters are preserved, and you can configure UTM values in the publish checklist for your other analytics systems. Channel-level UTM defaults fill missing values; values entered in the publish checklist replace the corresponding UTMs for that video’s tracked links.
Why don’t I see UTM parameters in the short link inside the YouTube description?
Section titled “Why don’t I see UTM parameters in the short link inside the YouTube description?”The visible URL is a Hitfactor redirect, so the destination parameters do not need to appear in the short URL. Hitfactor applies the configured parameters when it redirects the viewer to the destination and also adds an hf_cid parameter for Hitfactor attribution.
If the destination application redirects the visitor again, that application is responsible for preserving query parameters through its own redirect.
Can Hitfactor show which videos drove clicks?
Section titled “Can Hitfactor show which videos drove clicks?”Yes. Hitfactor reports click and conversion totals for each tracked link. Landing-page reporting also includes total performance and can break clicks out by source video. In the landing-page chart, conversions are currently shown in the combined all-videos view rather than broken out by video.
If viewers click but do not buy, is that a video problem?
Section titled “If viewers click but do not buy, is that a video problem?”Not necessarily. Clicks show that the video and call to action generated enough interest for viewers to visit the destination. A low conversion rate after the click can instead point to the landing page, offer, checkout, lead qualification, or sales process.
Evaluate each team against outcomes it can directly influence, while still examining the complete funnel before deciding where the problem occurred.
YouTube analytics and growth
Section titled “YouTube analytics and growth”What does VPD mean?
Section titled “What does VPD mean?”VPD means views per day. It is usually calculated as a video’s total views divided by the number of days since publication. It helps compare videos of different ages, but it is a noisy outcome measure and does not prove that YouTube is actively promoting a video. For very recent launches, views per hour or a clearly defined recent time window can be more informative.
What does Browse features traffic mean?
Section titled “What does Browse features traffic mean?”Browse features include YouTube surfaces such as Home and Subscriptions where viewers browse recommendations without entering a search query. Browse traffic means the video reached viewers through one of those surfaces. See How YouTube Works for how Browse differs from Suggested and Search.
Which traffic source is most valuable for channel growth?
Section titled “Which traffic source is most valuable for channel growth?”Browse and Suggested are usually the primary scaling surfaces because they allow YouTube to introduce a channel to viewers who were not actively searching for it. Search, External, and other sources can still be valuable, especially when they reach the right audience or produce business results. Use the channel’s own Traffic source report rather than assuming one universal mix applies to every channel.
Are short, two- or three-minute talking-head videos a good format?
Section titled “Are short, two- or three-minute talking-head videos a good format?”They can be. There is no universally ideal video length. A concise educational video can work well when it fulfills the title and thumbnail’s promise without unnecessary delay. Judge it against comparable regular videos and the outcome it was designed to produce.
A regular two- or three-minute upload is not automatically a YouTube Short. Shorts and regular videos have different viewing and traffic patterns, so avoid comparing their raw views as if they were the same format.
Are intro animations or music a good idea?
Section titled “Are intro animations or music a good idea?”Usually not at the start of an educational video. Open by confirming the promise made by the title and thumbnail. A generic welcome, logo animation, or music sting delays that confirmation and gives viewers an opportunity to leave before receiving value.
This does not mean every video must begin identically. The practical rule is to remove opening material that does not help the intended viewer understand why they should keep watching. See How to Write Great Hooks for opening structures.
Do playlists improve a video’s reach?
Section titled “Do playlists improve a video’s reach?”Playlists are useful for organization and navigation, but they are not a primary distribution lever. Use them to group videos that serve the same viewer and make a relevant next watch easier to find.
End screens can direct viewers to a logically related next video. Treat both as routing tools and verify their contribution in your own playlist and end-screen analytics rather than assuming they automatically increase recommendations.
Should a company promote a new YouTube video on LinkedIn?
Section titled “Should a company promote a new YouTube video on LinkedIn?”If LinkedIn promotion is part of the normal launch process and reaches relevant people, keep using it. Those visits appear as External traffic rather than Browse or Suggested traffic, and promotion does not bypass the need for viewers to click and keep watching.
Choose between an individual account and a company page based on where the intended audience already engages with you. Evaluate LinkedIn traffic and business outcomes separately instead of assuming that posting alone improves YouTube recommendations.
Should we launch a new channel for a different content format?
Section titled “Should we launch a new channel for a different content format?”Do not split a channel solely because a new format is different or because you have reached a particular number of uploads. A separate channel becomes useful when the new content serves a materially different viewer or viewing intent: someone who would routinely skip the channel’s other content.
A run of roughly 15 to 20 videos can provide evidence about whether the existing audience accepts the format, but that number is a testing heuristic, not a YouTube rule. Review what the channel has published most often and what has performed best over the last 12 to 18 months, then look for a consistent audience mismatch before splitting.
How was the reported $5 million in YouTube-attributed revenue measured?
Section titled “How was the reported $5 million in YouTube-attributed revenue measured?”The reported case should not be interpreted as $5 million measured through Hitfactor tracked links. It was an unusually observable business case: YouTube was the company’s main growing social channel, other social channels were largely flat, and Matt had access to internal revenue, sales, email, and Shopify data while working inside the company.
That evidence supports a relationship between the channel and the business outcome, but it does not make every dollar direct, click-level YouTube attribution. This level of analysis is also much harder when the person operating the channel cannot access revenue and conversion data.
