Connecting Your YouTube Channel
Look, Google made this confusing. We’re sorry.
Connecting your channel should be simple: sign in with Google, pick your channel, done. But thanks to Google’s “Brand Account” system, you might see unfamiliar names, weird avatars, and wonder if you’re in the right place.
This guide will help you get connected—even when things look wrong.
Quick Help
Section titled “Quick Help”The name and picture don’t match my channel! That’s normal. Many YouTube channels use a “Brand Account” that has a completely different name and avatar than your actual channel. Select it anyway—Hitfactor will connect to your real YouTube channel.
I don’t see my channel anywhere. You’re signed into the wrong Google account. Go to studio.youtube.com, click your profile picture, and check the email shown. That’s the Google account you need to use.
It says I don’t have permission. The channel’s Primary Owner must complete the connection. Managers, Editors, Viewers, and other team members should choose I’m not the channel owner so Hitfactor can ask the Primary Owner to connect it and invite them to the workspace.
I connected the wrong channel. Before connecting, check the actual channel on Hitfactor’s confirmation screen and choose Try different account if it is wrong. If the wrong channel is already connected, contact support so we can help change it.
I uploaded a video but don’t see it in Hitfactor. Usually just timing. Hitfactor checks YouTube for new uploads on a schedule, so a video you just posted can take a little while to appear. To pull it in right now, click Refresh videos, or ask the Ask Hitfactor assistant to check for new videos. See Newly uploaded video isn’t showing up below.
Before You Click Anything
Section titled “Before You Click Anything”Two things to confirm first:
-
You’re the Primary Owner of the channel. Other roles should use I’m not the channel owner so the Primary Owner can complete the connection.
-
You know which Google account owns your channel. Not sure? Here’s how to check:
- Go to studio.youtube.com
- Click your profile picture in the top right
- Note the email address shown—that’s the account you need
Step by Step
Section titled “Step by Step”1. Click “Connect channel”
Section titled “1. Click “Connect channel””If you’re not the owner (you’re a manager or editor), click “I’m not the channel owner” instead. That opens a short form where you enter the channel owner’s email, and Hitfactor invites them to connect the channel.
2. Sign in with the right Google account
Section titled “2. Sign in with the right Google account”Use the email you found in YouTube Studio. If you have multiple Google accounts, make sure you pick the right one—not just the first one shown.
3. Select the account associated with your channel
Section titled “3. Select the account associated with your channel”Here’s where people get stuck. You might see:
- A Brand Account name you don’t recognize
- An avatar that’s not your channel logo
- A weird email like
yourname-1234@pages.plusgoogle.com
This is normal. Pick the likely option. Hitfactor will show you the actual YouTube channel on a confirmation screen before completing the connection.
| If you see… | Do this |
|---|---|
| Your channel name | Select it |
| An unfamiliar Brand Account name | Select it anyway |
| Multiple options | Select the likely option, then verify the channel on the confirmation screen |
| Nothing at all | You’re signed into the wrong Google account—go back and try another |
4. Verify
Section titled “4. Verify”Hitfactor shows the channel name and subscriber count before completing the connection. If it is wrong, choose Try different account. Do not confirm a channel you do not intend to connect.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”Newly uploaded video isn’t showing up
Section titled “Newly uploaded video isn’t showing up”You just published a video on YouTube, but it’s not in your videos list in Hitfactor. This is almost always normal — and easy to fix.
Why it happens: Hitfactor checks YouTube for new uploads on a regular schedule rather than the instant you publish. If you just uploaded, there’s a good chance we simply haven’t run the next check for your channel yet. The video isn’t missing — Hitfactor hasn’t looked since you posted it.
How to fix it — force a check now:
- Click “Refresh videos” anywhere you see it (the workspace menu, the videos picker, the landing-pages page). This checks YouTube immediately and pulls in any new uploads.
- Or ask the Ask Hitfactor assistant — say something like “I uploaded a video but don’t see it.” The assistant will offer to check, and run the same refresh for you, then tell you how many new videos it found.
A refresh walks your channel’s recent uploads (both Public and Unlisted) and adds anything Hitfactor doesn’t already have.
If a refresh doesn’t bring it in, check these:
- Is the video Private? Hitfactor’s refresh flow discovers Public and Unlisted videos uploaded through YouTube Studio. A Private Studio upload may not appear through this discovery path, so set it to Unlisted or Public and refresh again. Videos uploaded through Hitfactor are tracked through its publishing workflow and can remain Private until scheduled.
- Did you just upload it (within the last minute or two)? Give YouTube a moment to finish processing, then refresh once more.
- Is your YouTube connection still healthy? If the connection has lapsed, new uploads stop coming in. Reconnect your channel in settings (see “I’m getting an error from Google” and the connection steps above), then refresh.
”I don’t see my channel anywhere”
Section titled “”I don’t see my channel anywhere””Your channel is connected to a different Google account than the one you signed in with.
How to fix it:
- Go to studio.youtube.com
- Make sure you’re viewing your channel (check the channel name in the top left)
- Click your profile picture in the top right
- Note the email address—this is the Google account you need
- Go back to Hitfactor and sign in with that email
”It says I don’t have permission”
Section titled “”It says I don’t have permission””You’re probably using a role other than Primary Owner. Hitfactor’s connection flow requires the channel’s Primary Owner.
How to check your role:
- Go to studio.youtube.com
- Click Settings in the left menu
- Click Permissions
- Find your email and check your role
If you’re not the Primary Owner, choose I’m not the channel owner in Hitfactor. Enter the Primary Owner’s email so they can connect the channel and invite you to the workspace.
”I see multiple Brand Accounts and don’t know which one”
Section titled “”I see multiple Brand Accounts and don’t know which one””Unfortunately, the account picker shows Brand Account names—not YouTube channel names. So you might see “John’s Old Business LLC” and have no idea that’s actually your “Awesome Tech Reviews” channel.
How to fix it:
- Select the likely option and check the actual channel on Hitfactor’s confirmation screen. If it is wrong, choose Try different account.
- You can also check myaccount.google.com/brandaccounts to see all your Brand Accounts (though this still shows Brand Account names, not channel names—thanks, Google).
”I connected the wrong channel”
Section titled “”I connected the wrong channel””The current Settings page can reconnect an existing channel but does not provide a switch-channel control. Contact support@hitfactor.com with the connected channel URL and the channel you intended to connect.
”I’m getting an error from Google”
Section titled “”I’m getting an error from Google””A few possibilities:
- “Access blocked”: You may have denied permissions. Try again and make sure to click “Allow” on all the permission screens.
- “Something went wrong”: Google’s having issues. Wait a few minutes and try again.
- Popup blocked: Make sure your browser allows popups from Hitfactor.
Still Stuck?
Section titled “Still Stuck?”Email us at support@hitfactor.com with:
- The email you’re signing in with
- Your YouTube channel URL
- A screenshot of what you see in the account picker
We’ll sort it out.
Understanding YouTube Account Types
Section titled “Understanding YouTube Account Types”If you’re curious why connecting a YouTube channel is so complicated, here’s the full explanation.
The Three-Layer System
Section titled “The Three-Layer System”YouTube doesn’t just have “accounts.” It has a layered system that looks like this:
Google Account (e.g., john.smith@gmail.com) └── Brand Account (e.g., "John's Old Business LLC") └── YouTube Channel (e.g., "Awesome Tech Reviews")Google Account: Your core identity. This is your email address—the thing you sign into Google with. It has its own name and profile picture.
Brand Account: An optional middle layer that sits between your Google Account and your YouTube channel. It has its own name and profile picture (which can be completely different from both your Google Account and your YouTube channel).
YouTube Channel: Your actual channel that viewers see. It has its own name, profile picture, banner, videos, subscribers—the works.
Why Brand Accounts Exist
Section titled “Why Brand Accounts Exist”Brand Accounts were created so that:
- Your channel can have a different name than your personal Google Account (so your channel can be “Awesome Tech Reviews” instead of “John Smith”)
- Multiple people can manage a channel without sharing passwords
- Your personal Google Account info stays private
This is genuinely useful. The problem is that it creates confusion during authentication.
Why the Account Picker Looks Wrong
Section titled “Why the Account Picker Looks Wrong”When you sign in via Google OAuth, the account picker shows:
- Your Google Account (email + Google profile name/picture)
- Your Brand Account(s) (Brand Account name + picture)
It does not show your YouTube channel name or picture. That only appears after you complete the connection.
So if your Brand Account is named “John’s Old Business LLC” with a generic avatar—even though your YouTube channel is “Awesome Tech Reviews” with a professional logo—you’ll see the Brand Account identity in the picker.
This is why we tell you to select something even if it looks wrong. The YouTube channel is hiding behind the Brand Account.
Personal vs. Brand Account Channels
Section titled “Personal vs. Brand Account Channels”Personal channel: Your YouTube channel is directly connected to your Google Account. No Brand Account in the middle. The picker will show your Google Account, and things usually “just work.”
Brand Account channel: Your YouTube channel is connected to a Brand Account, which is connected to your Google Account. The picker shows the Brand Account identity, which often doesn’t match your channel.
Most channels created for businesses, or channels that were created before ~2014 and later migrated, use Brand Accounts.
Permission Levels
Section titled “Permission Levels”For Brand Accounts, Google has a hierarchy:
| Role | Can connect to Hitfactor? |
|---|---|
| Primary Owner | ✅ Yes |
| Owner | ❌ No |
| Manager | ❌ No |
| Communications Manager | ❌ No |
YouTube Studio’s newer “Channel Permissions” system has more granular roles (Editor, Viewer, etc.), but the same rule applies in Hitfactor: the Primary Owner completes the connection.
How to Check Your Setup
Section titled “How to Check Your Setup”To see if you have a Brand Account:
- Go to myaccount.google.com/brandaccounts
- Any accounts listed here are Brand Accounts
To see your role on a channel:
- Go to studio.youtube.com
- Click Settings → Permissions
- Find your email and check your role
To see which Google Account owns a channel:
- Go to studio.youtube.com
- Click your profile picture in the top right
- The email shown is the Google Account
Why Google Did It This Way
Section titled “Why Google Did It This Way”Honestly? Legacy complexity. Brand Accounts originally supported multiple Google services (Google+, remember that?). Now they’re mostly just used for YouTube. Google has been slowly migrating toward the simpler “Channel Permissions” system, but millions of channels still use Brand Accounts.
We wish it were simpler. But at least now you understand why it’s not.
